Strike Bulletin 6 - 6/3/20

Dear UCU@BSU members

The strikes are working. We, and all branches in the country, are making an impact. We have had messages from support from several other branches and other unions, and we’ve been told that UCU@BSU has been an inspiration to others in its commitment and visibility in this round of strikes.

We are told that the UCU negotiators believe we are in reach of an agreement, with an increased offer of pay from the employers (3% increase, up from the 1.8% “final offer of a few weeks ago”; we are also told that UCEA has been “receptive in principle” to the non-pay demands, so there is a lot of progress and real negotiations are ongoing.

The wide and persistent participation in the strikes, and the visible picketing have been instrumental in getting there. Let’s keep up the fight, be visible and be heard.

Planned actions for next week:

  • No picket but we will engage in a Social Media Photo-bomb. Every member is asked to take a selfie with a sheet of paper that says “I’m striking because ... (fill in the blank) #ucustrike @UCUatBSU #fourfights #UCUStrikesBack

  • (TBC) Widcombe Social Club, Bath, BA2 6AA from 10.30 to 1pm: Emergency General Meeting for the whole branch. On the agenda: local implementation of Action Short of a Strike, workload campaign, how we move forward from here so that we are a really strong branch that the university has to respond to and supports members.

  • 8am-12pm BIG PICKET. Let’s make this the big one, impossible to miss and giving out the strongest message yet. Let’s ask ALL members to come to this one if they can. Let’s bring cameras and phones and post it all over social media.

  • Rally and march in Bristol. Meet at 10.30am at the Victoria Rooms, 88 Queens Road, BS8 1 SA

Do not forget the teach outs, which are scheduled for every afternoon next week from 2pm, upstairs at The Grapes, 14 Westgate St, Bath BA1 1EQ. These have been fun, interesting, thought-provoking and really well received. Click here for the schedule:

Please check our UCU@BSU branch website for latest information and remember that we can only email non-BSU email addresses on strike days. If you have not supplied a non-BSU email address yet, email
