Strike Bulletin 3

Friday, Feb 21st 2020

Thanks to everyone who turned up on the picket line, joined in with the strike, or sent messages of support.

It has been a really positive couple of days, with links being built between us and Bath Uni UCU and messages of support from our own student union (thanks Jazz and Megan - see this link for more:, Parisian colleagues and local groups.

At Newton Park we had some great responses from passing traffic, especially the bus drivers/ Corsham Court made a brave stance on the first day and Locksbrook danced - and engaged with passers-by. Some of our own students, local Labour party members and representatives from the regional office joined us on the picket line.

A big thanks to our picket leaders Martin, Jo and Roger, and also to Richard and Paul for two fantastic teach-outs at the Globe on Thursday afternoon.

1. Picketing: Next week we will continue to picket 8am – 12pm each day EXCEPT Wednesday when instead of picketing we will be joining the rally in Bristol (see no. 4 - below).  If you can only do one day, please come on Monday so we can have a strong presence at the start of the working week.

2. Communication: If you know of colleagues who are not getting these strike bulletins, please ask them to send me their non-work email addresses and I can add them to the list.  If you have not yet joined the WhatsApp group, ask someone who has and they should be able to add you.  It is OK for you to let your students know if you are planning to strike, with enough time so they do not have a wasted trip, but there is no obligation for you to tell your managers until after the strike day.

3. Teach-outs:  Richard and Roger are doing a great job of working with Bath Uni and booking rooms etc - as soon as we know more I will share the actual dates, titles and locations

4. Rally - (Bristol, Weds, 26th February)

Colleagues at Bristol have organised for Jo Grady, UCU General Secretary to speak at a Regional Strike Rally and March in Bristol on Wednesday 26th February

The plan is to assemble at the Victoria Rooms at 11 am for speeches, then march to College Green. Please bring your banners, and for those that are supervisors, your hi-viz jackets as we might need help with stewarding the march.

ADDRESS (Victoria Rooms): 88 Queens Road. Clifton, Bristol BS8 1SA

A reminder that we will NOT be picketing at Bath Spa on Wednesday.
