Message from Chair (UCU@BSU) – 19th February, 2020
Tomorrow we are one of seventy-four UCU branches at UK universities that will be taking industrial action by going on strike.
68% of all members of the branch voted in the ballot with over 76% voting to take industrial action.
I doubt there is a single member that really wants to go on strike but our working conditions and pay have deteriorated so much that we have got to the point where we have to say enough is enough.
Please remember that we have consulted with BSU on workloads for over 5 years now but the university never fully implemented the workload framework we consulted on and has ignored our repeated concerns about the damaging impact excessive workloads are having on many members.
We have consulted with BSU on casualised contracts but, again, too little action has been taken in response to our concerns that so many colleagues remain on these contracts and never know from one year to the next whether they will be working here or not.
Please join us on the picket lines and take part in our action for improvements on pay, equality, casualisation and workloads.
This is our best opportunity to demonstrate that there has to be change and, if all members go on strike tomorrow, we will be in a far stronger position to negotiate the changes we have to have.
The UCU General Secretary Jo Grady visited BSU on Monday in support of our action and has this message to us all ; https://youtu.be/y4wM8bYHwes
